Klementinum: History and charm of one of the most important buildings in Prague

Rich history, magnificent baroque buildings and fascinating library attract thousands of tourists and locals every year.

History

The Klementinum complex was originally founded as a Jesuit college in 1556. The Jesuits built a school here which became an important centre of learning and culture.

After the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773, the complex passed into the hands of the state and a university library was established here.

Architecture

The architecture of Klementinum is a mixture of different styles - from renaissance to baroque.

The most distinctive buildings include:

- The Clementinum Library, known as the National Library of the Czech Republic, is one of the most beautiful historical libraries in the world.

Its history dates back to the 18th century when it was part of the Jesuit astronomical observatory. Visitors can climb to the top and enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

  culture and events

As well as being an architectural gem, the Klementinum is also a vibrant cultural venue. It regularly hosts classical music concerts, art exhibitions and educational programmes.
