The Petřín Tower was built in 1891 as part of the Jubilee Exhibition. Its architecture reflects the trend of the time to romanticise historical buildings and technical innovations. The tower was designed by architect Vratislav Pasovský and its construction was quick thanks to the use of prefabricated iron parts. Since its opening it has been a tourist attraction and a symbol of national revival. In 1938, a tower was added to increase its height to the present 63 metres. Visitors can climb 299 steps to reach the viewing platform at 55 metres above the ground.
Today, the Petřín lookout tower is one of the most visited places in Prague. Every year it attracts thousands of tourists and locals who want to enjoy a panoramic view of the historical part of the city and the surrounding countryside. The observation tower is open all year round and offers various events and themed programmes for families and individuals. There are also other attractions nearby, such as the Rose Garden and the Mirror Maze, making this an ideal day trip.
