Full Description
Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) was one of the great Czech composers of romantic music, his inspiration was drawn from the idioms and melodies of Moravian and Bohemian folk songs.
He composed symphonic, choral and chamber music. His works include the New World Symphony, the Slavonic Dances, the American String Quartet and the Cello Concerto in B minor. He also wrote operas, of which the best known is Rusalka.
Performance takes place in Villa America which was built as a summer palace. For two centuries this magnificent Baroque pleasure house attracted aristocrats to its stylish interiors and well-manicured grounds.
The concert is held in the Music Salon, which holds a wonderful ceiling fresco called "Rise of Apollo" by Jan Ferdinand Schor and an imposing Baroque fireplace. Musicians are dressed in period costumes and the master, Antonín Dvořák, is due to arrive at any moment…
The performance is featured in English and Czech, while the arias are performed in their original language. Multilingual programs are available, the program is about 80 minutes long without interlude.
The palace also hosts the Antonín Dvořák Museum. The museum collects, maintains and displays documents and personal effects chronicling the composer's life and works. Exhibits include sheet music manuscripts, programmes, posters, works of art, and period photographs as well as personal objects and correspondence.
